Round Fiberglass Wick Is A Fizzle….Round Fiberglass Wick Won’t Wick? Flat Cotton Wick Smokes Too Much….Fiberglass Wick, Round Cotton Wick, Flat Cotton Wick Help Here!!!  Feeling Burned By Your Wick, Don’t Throw It Out.  Snip It and Prime!  Find out how to win with your wick.

I think the most important thing to success with your wick purchase is to make sure your round fiberglass wick is thoroughly primed before lighting.  I like to pour some fuel down the top just before lighting even.  I let the wick soak for several minutes, longer as the diameter of your wick increases.  Then I pour a little fluid down the top of the wick to make sure the wick is wetted from top to bottom.  Any dry spots and your wick may flame-out.  Your round fiberglass wick is just like a water pump.  Most pumps that move water or fuel will not pull fluid through air.  That means that if you fill your wine bottle with fuel and then set the wick into the bottle it may not light properly.  But wait it’s a round fiberglass wick, it must be defective if you can’t just set it into fluid and light.  It may pull fuel and work find, but for success every time your wick needs to be wet from top to bottom.

You can have other issues that affect fiberglass wick performance.  There are many sources on the internet for heights that your round fiberglass wick, flat cotton wick, and round cotton wick will pull fuel.  What does that mean???  Under the very best conditions there are limits to how high above the fuel level your wick can pull fuel.  It is working off of capillary action and there are limits to how strong this passive pump works.  For example you can expect round fiberglass wick to pull fuel about 6″ at best.  Your wick will begin to not be able to supply fuel more than 6″ above the oil reservoir height.  So top off your reservoirs when they drop too far.

Another issue you can have with your fiberglass wick is vacuum effect.  If air cannot get into the container, the longer it burns, the more vacuum created until your flame will go out.   You are pulling fuel out of the can and the wick is soaked with fluid making it a perfect plug.  So if you are making a DIY fiberglass wick creation make sure you plan on how to vent the fuel reservoir.

Lastly I find that a freshly trimmed wick is the best start to a lamp burn.  Even one use can carbon foul a wick blocking the ability of the wick to function properly.  If you are having issues and you feel the wick is primed properly, try snipping off the burn end, prime again and light.

Always clean up any spilled fuel.  I find a little flip top travel shampoo bottle can be a good tool to prime a wick and not make a mess.  The tip allows pinpoint squirting of the fuel directly onto your fiberglass wick.

Here is a video I produced to help a customer work through some wick performance issues.

Another problem can be smoking wicks.  Besides poor quality fuel your next culprit to a smoking fiberglass wick will be wick height.  How high you pull your wick about the flame arrestor makes a huge difference for both flame height and smoke produced.  The more fiberglass wick or round cotton wick you pull above the flame arrestor the more flame and more smoke.  I did testing for a customer who was making rock candles.  When you make a rock candle I believe you need something to hold your fiberglass wick.  I would use something like a thermal glass wick tube.  I found that my round cotton wick needed to be run almost flush with the top of my thermal glass tube wick holder.  It produced a candle sized flame when flush.  Now that is a fine wick!  Please see my demonstration video here:
